I've seen a lot of license plates that say "FRONT BC".
I know that BC is Baja California but what is FRONT in this context?

My sweetie says she saw one that said "FRONT SON".
I think that SON is Sonora, but again what is FRONT here?

Feeling clueless,

Frontera, Spanish for frontier or border.

Neil has the correct spelling. I gave it in English. Also, from my
understanding, Baja California is not a state or province of Mexico,
but a territory. That is why it is 'Front' on the plates.

Fontera - Baja California & Sonora - The frontera plates might allow certain
types of cars or transport, I don't know

However Baja California is a state of Mexico just like Baja California Sur,
Oaxaca, etc...

Thanks for the update on Baja Calif and Baja Calif Sur. I only heard
that they were territories and not states.

That is correct, FRONT = frontera or fronterizo (border). BC is a state, as are 30 of the other 31 entities, with the exception being the Distrito Federal (Federal District, Mexico City). All border states (BC, Sonora - SON, Chihuahua - CHIH, Coahuila - COAH, and Tamaulipas - TAMPS) issue FRONT plates to residents who operate within 20 km of the US border. Theoretically they will be crossing the border more often, and supposedly the FRONT plates make crossings easier. Nuevo Leon does not issue FRONT plates because its border with the US is so small, and very few people live up there. Despite the fact that it does not border the US, Baja California Sur issues FRONT plates in the duty-free district of La Paz. I don't know why. Feel free to email me with any other Mexican plate questions.
